An IPSC target is not pass-or-fail, it is graded by precision. The central Alpha is worth the most, the surrounding Charlie less, and the outer Delta least, while a separate white no-shoot penalizes any hit. In dry fire the zones give you a precise point to aim at and honest feedback on where the front sight actually sat when the trigger broke, which is why a marked target beats a blank silhouette.

Scoring zones
