How does a timed run actually work?
A timed run is not just a beep you race. It runs in three beats, and each one has a reason. First comes Make Ready, a short countdown you set yourself. This is the start delay, and it exists because at home you train alone: you press start, then walk from the phone to your shooting position while the countdown runs. Then the Standby command sounds, the way it does on a real stage. And then, after a gap you cannot predict, the start beep.
That random gap is the point. If the signal came at the same instant every time, your body would learn the rhythm and start moving a hair early, and you would be measuring a memorized beat instead of your honest reaction. A delay of a second or two that you cannot time out kills that trick. You simply react, which is the real thing you came to train, and the number you get back is one you can actually trust.
Why train with set drills instead of random clicking?
Here is the shift that separates real training from clicking in front of a mirror. A good session is not "press the trigger a lot." It is running a defined drill: a set distance, a target, a start condition, and a clear goal. When the setup is fixed, tonight's run is comparable to last week's, and the timer has something honest to measure. A sensible ladder of drills looks like this, and it climbs from simple to demanding.

What do target times and Hit Factor tell you?
Each drill comes with a target time, and it is easy to read it as a verdict. It is not one. A target time is a direction to walk, a rough sense of what a solid run looks like, and it shifts with your gear, your holster, and whether you start from Condition 2 or Condition 3. Treat it as a compass, set your own goal near your honest current pace, and let it creep down as the movement gets cleaner.
The number that actually decides things is Hit Factor, your points weighed against your time. Points come from where the shots land, with the Alpha zone worth the most, and time is what you spent earning them. This is why chasing the clock is the wrong instinct. A blazing run full of misses scores worse than a slightly slower run of clean Alphas, because Hit Factor divides one by the other. Speed only counts once the hits are there, and the drills are built to teach you that order: hits first, then the clock.
How do splits show your gun handling?
Your first shot is half the story. The other half is your splits, the time between one shot and the next. Splits show how well you run the gun once it is up: how fast you recover, how smoothly you move from target to target, how quickly you get back on the sights and press again. In dry fire the timer fixes each click by sound and marks the gap, and a lot of quiet progress hides in those gaps.

Why film every run?
Numbers tell you what happened, not why. Your split got slower, but was it the grip, the draw, or the reload that leaked the time? You cannot watch your own hands while you shoot, and at the range a coach would catch it. Training alone at home, no one will, unless the camera does it for you.
This is why filming the run matters as much as timing it. You set the phone on a tripod, aim it at your position, and the app records the run for you, from the front or the rear camera, whichever you chose. Afterward you watch it back next to the numbers, and the two together tell the whole story: the timer says the reload cost you time, and the video shows your support hand arriving late. That is a correction you can actually make, instead of guessing in the dark.
What mistakes quietly ruin timer training?
The first mistake is letting the clock outrank your hits. You see a slow time, you rush the next run, and you record a spray of misses that Hit Factor punishes harder than the slow time ever would. Points come first, then speed, and the drills are arranged to keep that order in front of you.
The second is dropping your guard once the session feels routine. The most dangerous moment in dry fire is the reload of a live magazine after you finish, so announce the session over and keep ammunition out of the room until you have.
The third is a timer that fights you. An airsoft replica and a soft trigger click very quietly, and when you push the microphone sensitivity up to catch that faint sound, it starts reacting to footsteps, a creaking floor, and its own echo. A measurement that fires at random noise is worse than none, because it looks real while being nonsense. Tuning the sensitivity to your specific setup is what makes the numbers trustworthy.
And the last one, the most common of all, is simply quitting after a week. Dry fire feels dull right up until a number you can move appears. The moment it does, shaving a split from one point eight down to one point five gets genuinely interesting, and the habit stops needing willpower.
How often and how long should you train with a timer?
There is a pull toward the heroic session, the plan to really commit one day and dry fire for a solid hour. In practice, by the fortieth minute the draw is falling apart, your attention has drifted, and the last stretch is spent cementing the exact mistake you meant to erase. Short and frequent wins by a wide margin. Fifteen focused minutes a day gives you fewer runs per sitting, but nearly all of them are clean, and the brain locks a skill in far more willingly through small daily touches than through one exhausting slog.
So set the goal as a count of clean runs, not a stretch of time. Something like ten clean runs of one drill, and when you have them, you close the session until tomorrow. A rushed, sloppy run does not count toward the ten. That way you bank quality instead of fatigue, and the numbers you logged actually mean something.
Do you need a physical timer, or is an app enough?
A standalone hardware timer is a fine tool, and if you own one, use it. For dry fire specifically it runs into two walls.
