You printed the dry fire targets, taped them to the wall, and then stopped. Where do you aim? What are these zones, and how many points is each one worth? This guide walks through IPSC target zones from the ground up - Alpha, Charlie, Delta and the poppers - so every dry click at home works toward a result instead of just landing somewhere on the paper.
What do IPSC target zones mean?
A practical shooting target is not just a silhouette with a bullseye in the middle. It is divided into scoring zones: the central Alpha, the most valuable, the Charlie ring around it, and the outer Delta along the edges of the body. The head has its own small Alpha in the center with a Charlie around it.
There is also a plain white target standing apart - the no-shoot. It is a "hostage," a target you are not allowed to hit. Put a round into it and you take a penalty. In the Materials set it comes as a separate sheet, so you can build a realistic array where something you must not touch stands right next to your target.
The idea behind IPSC target zones is simple: IPSC shooting is not "hit or miss," it is how precisely you hit. That is exactly why at home, in dry fire, you never aim at the target in general - you aim at one point, the center of the Alpha.
How many points is each scoring zone worth?
Here is the scoring table behind IPSC target zones, the thing the whole sport is built around:
- Alpha - 5 points.
- Charlie - 4 points with a powerful load (in the sport this is called Major) or 3 with a lighter one (Minor).
- Delta - 2 points (Major) or 1 (Minor).
- A miss - minus 10.
- A hit on a no-shoot (the "hostage") - minus 10.
At home you do not need to think about Major and Minor: there is no ammunition, no recoil, no power factor. Keep the one thing that follows from this table: spread costs points. One Delta instead of an Alpha is three points gone, and a single miss wipes out two clean Alphas. So at home you are not training "shoot fast" - you are training "put it in the center, every time."
What are poppers, and how do they score?
Alongside paper targets, IPSC uses poppers - steel targets on a stand, shaped like a bottle or a mushroom. They have no zones. A popper that falls scores 5 points, the same as an Alpha; a popper left standing scores nothing. The logic is binary: down means scored, standing means zero. So you do not admire a popper, you hit it in the wide part of the body to knock it over cleanly.
Poppers come in two sizes - the full IPSC Popper and the smaller Mini Popper. In our Materials they are drawn to the official proportions. In dry fire a popper teaches one thing well: transitioning the gun and closing out a target fast, without fine aiming - you do not need tight precision, you need to catch the shape and move on.
What is Hit Factor, and how do you calculate it?
This is where the last two sections come together. Hit Factor is your total points divided by your time in seconds. The formula is short:
Hit Factor = points / time (sec)
Say you fire six shots, all Alpha - that is 30 points. You do it in 3 seconds, and your Hit Factor is 10.0. The same result in 4 seconds is only 7.5. Same accuracy, slower, lower number. Now flip it: you shoot just as fast, in 3 seconds, but two rounds drift into Charlie - now it is 28 points, not 30, and the Hit Factor drops to 9.3.
That is the whole point of practical shooting, and the whole value of Hit Factor: it honestly shows that fast-and-dirty and slow-and-clean can land on the same result, and the winner is whoever found the balance. At home, in dry fire, this is your main gauge of progress - not a feeling, but a number that either climbs week to week or does not.

Why do IPSC target zones matter in dry fire?
At the range, the hole in the paper checks you. At home, in dry fire, there is no shot - only a click and a picture in your sights. And that makes it easy to fool yourself: "well, roughly center." The zones close that loophole. With a marked target in front of you, you aim not at a silhouette but at one specific Alpha, and in the instant of the click you see honestly where the front sight sat - dead center, or already sliding into Charlie.
That is why a marked target beats a blank silhouette, and why dry fire against the zones is worth more than just clicking away in the evening. Every rep trains not movement in general, but a precise press into the most valuable point - and that accountable press is exactly what IPSC target zones are for.
What do the 1/3 and 1/6 target scales mean?
At home you do not have fifteen meters to the target. You have a room. So targets are printed reduced: 1/3 is three times smaller than the real thing, 1/6 is six times smaller. And here a simple optical trick does the work: your eye does not know the target's real size, it only sees its angular size - how much of your field of view it fills.
From that comes the rule the whole home-training method rests on: a reduced target up close gives the eye the very same picture a full target gives far away. The front sight covers the same slice of the target, the aim settles into the same center. You train the same press you would at long range, only scaled to your own room.
Which target scale fits your room?
The rule in one line: take the distance you want to simulate, divide it by the scale, and that is where the target goes. And the other way around, starting from your room:
A 1/3 target at 3 meters looks like a full-size one at 9 meters. Step back to 5 meters and it becomes 15 meters, a mid-stage distance. A 1/6 target at those same 3 meters is a far 18 meters.
So the choice follows your space. If you are cramped, with a real 2 to 3 meters to work with, take 1/6: it turns a hallway into a distant 12 to 18 meter line where fine precision rules. If you have room to step back, 3 to 5 meters, take 1/3: you get the close-to-mid range of 9 to 15 meters, where you work the speed of the press and transitions between targets. Many people keep both sets at home and swap them to train IPSC target zones at different distances in one room.
Does a scaled target really train the same skill?
It can feel like shooting a little scrap of paper is not serious, a game of pretend. In fact it is the opposite. Because the eye takes in only angular size, a 1/3 target at three meters builds exactly the same sight picture as a real one at nine: the same ratio of front sight to Alpha, the same precision you must hold. If you push the muzzle off by a couple of degrees, the miss shows on the reduced target just as clearly as on the big one - only in a smaller scale.
Only one thing matters: the scale and the distance have to match. Hang a 1/6 target right up close, a meter from your face, and the picture falls apart - too large, and the training loses its meaning. Hold the calculated distance, and the reduced target stands in honestly for the big one.
How do you drill IPSC target zones at home with a tracker?
Safety first, and there is no skipping it. Take every live round out of the room, check the chamber with your eyes, and keep the muzzle pointed straight at the target. Only then do you begin.
Then the tracker takes over. You stand the phone on a tripod facing the line, set a start delay so you have time to walk to your position, and the app itself calls Make Ready, then Standby, then - after a random one to three seconds, so you cannot time it - the start signal. On the beep you press out into the Alpha and break the shot. The app fixes your dry click through the microphone, films the run, and files the rep in a journal.

One detail when you print: set the scale to 100% and turn off "fit to page" in the printer settings. Otherwise the printer resizes the image to the sheet on its own and throws off the size - and with it, all of our distance math. If you want to check, there is a control mark on the sheet you can measure with a ruler.
