The modern pistol stance is the isosceles - named for the even triangle the extended arms form. You stand square to the target, feet about shoulder-width apart, weight on the balls of your feet, chest and shoulders carried slightly forward as if bracing for a shove. The point is to let the whole body soak up recoil so the muzzle returns to the target on its own, instead of the wrist fighting it shot after shot. It is a pure motor skill that sets fast in front of a mirror during dry fire at home. See also grip and draw.
Concept
Stance
The athletic, square shooting position: weight forward on the balls of the feet, knees soft, and both arms extended into an even triangle so the body - not the wrist - absorbs recoil.
